Artist Biography

Paul Gallard-Lepinay was a French marine painter from Paris, and student of Claude Jacquard. He regularly exhibited from 1864 to 1884 in the Paris Salon and was appointed in 1882 painter to the Ministry of Marine. He initially painted coastal landscapes and sea pictures, then subjects were the fishing life of Normandy and harbour scenes from Le Havre, La Rochelle, and Marseille, the Bosporus and Venice. In 1877 he attended the celebrations in Cherbourg and painted scenes from the naval manoeuvres, and historical battle scenes.

A view of Venice is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Other paintings are housed in the Musée Thomas-Henry in Cherbourg and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper.

Gallery note: A very good coastal scene of good size by Gallard-Lepinay, recently restored and conserved with new support canvase, and presented in bespoke gilt frame.
