Artist Biography

This fabulous portrait of an elegant lady holding a mask is very well executed and by an established portrait painter, circa 1840/50.

The Ermine lined cloak shows the sitter was from nobility- perhaps a Bavarian Countess. The relaxed pose of the suggests an informal event or party rather than a court ball.

After initial research we believe the portrait shows the influence of the German portrait painter Joseph Karl Stieler (1781 -1858), possibly by an artist within his circle, in his lifetime.

Stieler became royal court painter of the Bavarian kings from 1820 until 1855, and known for his Neoclassical portraits,  notably Marie of Prussia as Crown Princess of Bavaria, for the Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace, commissioned by King Ludwig I.

Ludwig commissioned Stieler’s nephew and disciple Friedrich Dürck (1809-1884) to create two more portraits for the collection in 1861, and should be considered as our artist in Stieler’s circle.

Gallery note: This stunning portrait has been recently relined on a new support canvas by our gallery. Original ornate gilt 19th  century frame.
