Beautiful Magdalene by a Rare Florentine Artist Discovered

Recent restoration on a penitent Magdalene by an unknown hand, has revealed the signature of Pietro Carloni a rare painter and miniaturist from Florence.

Pietro Carloni was a follower of the famous Baroque painter Carlo Dolci (1616-86), known for his emotive rendering of religious subjects and his detailed and polished finish. Mary Magdalene was his most frequently represented subject.

The painting was cleaned, and lined with a new support canvas in 2019, and restoration is a work in progress. We are hoping to have Mary fitted back in her fine Florentine frame Autumn 2020.
