The Girl at the Gate ~ After George Clausen

This wonderful painting is a half size period copy of George Clausens’ monumental painting of 1889, ‘The Girl at the Gate’. The original was purchased from the Grosvenor Gallery Exhibition of 1890 for the Chantry Bequest and now hangs in The Tate Gallery.

‘The Girl at the Gate’ marked a watershed in Clausens career, using his new square brush technique of applying strokes of paint, and both painting and style was greatly admired by his contemporaries.

The girl at the gate was Mary (Polly) Baldwin a village girl from Cookham Dene in Berkshire, who acted as both nursemaid and model for the artist. A small 10×8 inch head shoulders portrait of Polly by Clausen ‘A Village Maiden’ was sold at Christies, London 4 June 2009, lot 30 for £481,250.

This well executed and faithful copy was painted by a very accomplished English Post-Impressionist painter in his own right, directly from the original in The Tate. The artist whose identity remains to date unknown, was quite possibly in the circle of Clausen.

An extremely rare opportunity to acquire an English Post-Impressionist painting of fabulous quality and provenance.
