Selous was born in Deptford, son of the artist George Slous. He became a painter of genre, portraits, landscapes, historical and literary subjects, especially scenes from Shakespeare; lithographer, illustrator and author. Slous was a pupil of John Martin and entered the Royal Academy Schools circa 1818.

He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy from 1818 to 1831 and at the British Institute and at Suffolk Street, under the name of Slous.

He changed his name to Selous in 1837 and exhibited under that name from 1838 to 1885.

In 1843 he won a £200 premium in the Westminster Hall cartoon competition.

Selous produced illustrations for the Art Union and illustrated many books.

Works Represented: Victoria & Albert Museum (his painting of the opening of the Great Exhibition) Liverpool; Sheffield.
