Portrait of Thomas Gooch, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge (1674-1754); and his wife, Mary Sherlock
A pair, both wearing clerical dress, she wearing an orange dress, white chemise and a blue robe.
These paintings were painted circa 1717 and show Thomas Gooch and his wife Mary Sherlock at the time of their marriage. Gooch’s’ preferment in the church was already well advanced. He had served as Chaplain in Ordinary to Queen Anne, he was a lecturer at Greys Inn, had been made Master of Caius College in November 1716 and Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge the following year. His wife was the daughter of Dr. William Sherlock, the famous Dean of St. Pauls, and sister of Thomas Sherlock, Master of St. Catherine’s Hall, Cambridge. Gooch and Sherlock were close friends and their joint preferment in the church led the former became in succession, Bishop of Bristol, Norwich, Ely, and the latter, Bishop of Salisbury and London.

Thomas Murray or Murrey (1663 – 1734) was a prominent Scottish portrait-painter. Thomas Murray received his first lessons in art from one of the De Critz family. Subsequently, he became a pupil of John Riley; like his master, Murray was just a face-painter, leaving the rest of the picture to be completed by others.
