A highly decorative example of equestrian art in the mid-Georgian period, by a talented provincial artist familiar with the work of Thomas Stringer and during his lifetime. Initialled ‘P.L.’
Thomas Stringer (Sometimes referred to as ‘Francis’) was born in Knutsford in Cheshire, and specialised in equestrian portraits and hunting subjects, painting many commissions for the gentry of Cheshire and Lancashire. He is said to have begun life as a servant to Peter Legh (1727/8-1804) of Booths Hall in Knutsford, one of the oldest Cheshire families, but after an argument with his employer left to pursue a full-time career as an artist.
There were few Georgian artists who painted in the style of Stringer and his contemporaries John Wootton, and the Sartorius family. It is highly likely our artist is recorded but we have not been able to identify his name to-date.
Provenance. Private family collection London
