Artist Biography

Emily Beatrice Bland was born in Lincoln. Studied at the Lincoln School of Art, then at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks and Fred Brown 1892-94. Held her first solo show at Leicester Galleries in 1922, other solo shows at Redfern and Arthur Tooth & Son galleries. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Arts Club, Fine Art Society, Burlington House, Goupil Gallery, and elsewhere.

She was especially known for her flower pieces, but also painted landscapes and coastal landscapes. One of her landscapes ‘The Orchard’ was bought by the Queen in 1940. Chantrey Bequest bought two works for the Tate Gallery, one ‘Yachts at Lymington’(Exh.1938).

Her work is represented in University of Hull Art Gallery, Hastings Museum, Wolverhampton Arts & Heritage, Kirklees Museum, Bradford Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, Portsmouth Museum, Herbert Art Gallery, Cheltenham Art Gallery, Williamson Museum, Worthing Art Gallery and other British and overseas public galleries and art collections.

Gallery note: This is a very good example of Emily Bland’s still life compositions with lovely contrasting colours and non-colours, in dabbled light on a window ledge.
