This extraordinary full panoramic view of the chateau and grounds are a fascinating record of Versailles circa 1870.
It does not seem to derive from any tradition print we can trace. It is particularly fascinating as it shows the grounds in their somewhat overgrown state that they were in during the later 19th Century, long before the extensive restoration to their state today.
The raised aerial view point gives some idea of the scale of the Palace and its fabulous grounds and fountains. It is possible that this view could have been drawn from a ‘hot air balloon’ as there are several figures looking up from around the fountain. A superb piece of historical painting.
