Introduction
Harold Gaze’s enchanted works, which are filled with fairies, mermaids, nymphs and elfish creatures, have left an important legacy in the world of children’s illustration.
Artist Biography
Harold Gaze was one of the most original writers and illustrators of children’s fantasy fiction. He was born in New Zealand and studied art in London during the First World War. After the war he moved to Melbourne in Australia, where he wrote and illustrated nine children’s fantasies.
Gaze returned to London in the early 20’s and continued to create illustrated books.
Gaze moved to Pasadena in California in 1927 and staged several successful solo exhibitions of fantasy watercolours in Los Angeles.
His imaginative, enchanted works, which are filled with fairies, mermaids, nymphs and elfish creatures, have left an important legacy in the world of children’s illustration.
