This work of Cattle and Drovers in a Wooded Landscape is very much in the manner of the renowned painter Dutch Andreas Schelfhout (1787–1870), known for his landscape paintings during the Romantic period in Holland.
Schelfhout’s Dutch winter scenes and frozen canals with skaters were already famous during his lifetime, and he became one of the most influential Dutch landscape artists of his century. Schelfhout had many followers, like the talented 19th century Dutch School artist of this present work, with indistinct signature and considered for many years as an actual work by him, as seen in the old labels’ verso.
