Artist Biography

The paper tobacco carton is inscribed w.andere, Zoorten van Tabac ZVR, and thought to be an early brand. The relaxed posture of the sitter, possibly the ‘merchant’, with tobacco and pipe so prominent suggests the portrait was commissioned as a form of advertisement. This would account for the work not being signed.

The quality of this painting is very high indeed, and by a highly accomplished Flemish artist, dated to about 1720.
