This charming Georgian painting is undoubtably by a very talented artist working during Thomas Gainsborough’s period and whose indistinct signature has defied our efforts to-date to identify the author.
The subject of shepherd boys was used by the painter Thomas Gainsborough, R.A. (1727-1788) in several works in the early 1780’s. The present work does not appear to be a direct copy of a known Gainsborough and is by a close follower of the fashionable portrait and landscape painter and in his period.
The quality of the hand is very good with superb grouping of the sheep, and the notably the young boy’s clothes. Original ornate gilt frame, re-gilded. Relined & Restored.
