John Campbell Mitchell was a Scottish Landscape painter born in Campbeltown, and eventually settled in Edinburgh. Studied at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools and in Paris.
He was best known for his rolling Scottish landscapes with broad expanses of moorland, under changeable atmospheric skies as well as expanses of sea and sky. He represented the best of his kind of Scottish landscape, painting in pure, clear colours with a fluent oil technique and great sense of movement.
Exhibited at the RA 1884-1904. Elected ARSA 1904, RSA 1919.Exhibited 49 works at the RSA.
