William Henry Midwood was a London painter of genre scenes in the 1860’s and 70’s.The majority of Midwood’s pictures concentrate on the humble domestic interior. Groups of figures are portrayed in idealized scenarios of family life, with children, the elderly and scenes of courtship prominent in his subject matter.
‘Contemplation’ exemplifies these trends within his work and is one of his finest genre scenes. A family, depicted from grandparents to grandchildren, is seated around the hearth in a simple and slightly dishevelled cottage. All eyes are on the attentive dog with the exception of the gentleman with a clay pipe reading the newspaper.
A truly exceptional Victorian genre painting museum quality.
