Marie Fontaine was painter and pastelist born in Paris in 1816.
She studied under L.Cogniet and went on to marry the artist Edme Adolphe Fontaine who was known for his military subjects and portraits.
Marie Fontaine exhibited portraits and still lives at the Paris Salon between 1846-66.
She died in Versailles in 1877.
A very decorative floral arrangement with wonderful colours and light, so typical of the French painters of the period, and much admired and collected in America.
