James Millar was a Birmingham portrait painter. First in Birmingham Poor Law Levy Books 1763;Died Birmingham 5 December 1805. He was the leading portrait painter in Birmingham during the last quarter of the century and has a considerable range of style-from life-size full lengths to small scale conversation pieces. Birmingham Gallery has six portraits ranging from 1774-1797. Millar exhibited SA 1771, RA 1784-1790, always from Birmingham. Bibl.City Art Gallery, Birmingham.
