Biography

James Sant was one of the most celebrated portraitists of his time. A pupil of John Varley and A.W. Callcott. Exhibited at R.A.1840-1904, elected R.A. 1869.

As a portrait painter Sant enjoyed the patronage of many noble families. Portraits by him can be seen in many English country houses.

The young lady holding a posy is possibly Sant`s daughter, Mary Edith, born 1852
