Enness was born in Bocking, Essex in 1876. He went on to study at the Slade School and at St. Juliens in Paris. He became a landscape and still life painter in oil and watercolours. His work was well known at the Royal Academy and the important Provincial Galleries and also at the Paris Salon. Enness is recorded as being at 1 Edwardes Square Studio, Kensington and he also had a studio in Whitby. He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy; Chenil Galleries 2; Dudley Gallery 10; Fine Art Society 67; Glasgow Institute of Fine Art 4; Walker Art Gallery Liverpool 5; Manchester City Art Gallery 2; Royal Society of British Artists 43; Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour 2; Ridley Art Club 4; Royal Institute of oil Painters 40; Royal Scottish Academy 1; Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour 1. In 1923 Enness was an Associate of the Royal Society of British Artists and a full member in 1925.
He is known to have lived in Whitby, Yorkshire in 1905 and London from 1915 to 1937. His work owes much to the French Post Impressionist training he received at the Academy Juliens. Enness died in 1948 at Tonbridge in Kent.
